Heraklion walls, the Byzantine, Arabian and Venetian walls of Heraklion

Heraklion walls, or more accurately, the Venetian walls of Heraklion are an excellent example of the fortification architecture of the 16th century A.D. The first Heraklion walls were built by the Byzantines and they were improved later by the Arabs. The walls we see today in Heraklion were built by the Venetians. The Venetian walls of Heraklion resisted to the siege by the turkish army for 21 years, and they also survived the Luftwaffe bombings in 1941
